Yesterday players for DR Congo Football Team staged a silent protest ahead of their AFCON match against Ivory Coast. A genocide has been raging on for decades in Congo, where TWENTY-SIX MILLION are in need of humanitarian aid, and an estimated SEVEN-MILLION are displaced. The players covered their mouths and held two fingers to their heads representing the violence and silent complicity of much of the world. Several players also wore black armbands in solidarity with the victims. Billions of pounds of natural resources are controlled, exploited, plundered and extracted by foreign companies. DRC produces 70% of the world’s cobalt, an essential component of batteries used in phones such as the one that I’m writing this on, and more than likely the one that you’re reading this post on. Despite this, DRC ranks 179 out of 191 in the Human Development Index, which measures things such as health, life expectancy, education, etc. DRC is also one of the most underfunded UN Human Rights Council operations in the world. What is happening today is the legacy of colonialism where 10 million (likely more) were subjected to genocide by Belgian King Leopold II. Upon independence, colonisers Belgium and the US supported the assassination of their first democratically elected leader, Patrice Lumumba. “Use the same energy that you put into talking about the Nations Cup to highlight what is happening with us. There are no small gestures.” - Cedric Bakambu, DRC Striker “Une très grosse pensée pour toutes les victimes des atrocités de Goma et à leurs familles. Je prie de tout mon cœur que mon pays retrouve sa paix. 🇨🇩❤️” - Chancel Mbemba, DRC Captain Whilst our hands are scrolling, texting, creating content etc, we’re holding phones that are more than likely linked to the enduring violence in Congo. So I’m asking you personally, yes you, to take a few minutes of your day to research and read up on what’s happening. Spread as much knowledge as you find, to people in your circles and networks. Keep talking 🇨🇩 #drc #congolaise🇨🇩 #freecongo🇨🇩 #decolonise #cobalt #afcon #footballtiktok #footballprotest
