But the Umayyad Arabs of Córdoba answered with overwhelming force. Emir Abd al-Rahman II rapidly organized cavalry, infantry, and river defenses, surrounding the Vikings near Seville and crushing them in battle. Large numbers of raiders were killed, captured, or executed, while the survivors fled back to the sea in defeat.
