You hit on the best reason not to tax unrealized gains that almost no one else gets. Forcing the separation of the entrepreneur from their capital would indeed be disastrous, Elon, like it or not, is best placed to increase the value of his own investments. Better solution - Eliminate the tax favored treatment of debt, reduce taxes on saving and investment, increase them on consumption (national VAT would be ideal in exchange for lower income tax rates).

Property tax is a tax on unrealized gains so… we obviously have the capacity to do it.

it's simple, a flat federal tax rate at say a 2% or 3% rate for every citizen regardless of how much money a person has, period. the guy making $50k a year and the guy making $100m a year, they each pat the same flate percentage rate.

It’s not a tax problem. It’s a currency problem. To fix the problem you have to make the dollar a stable store of value.

The ordinary homeowner is taxed on unrealized gains every year. The value goes up than the amount that you owe the government goes up. So I don’t know why they can’t text unrealized gains for the ultra rich.

Could we make it that stocks aren't allowed to be collateral in a loan?

charge a flat tax on purchases and we won't have to worry about this anymore. however that will never happen because the rich are the ones writing our laws.

I’m not an expert in this so I’m just going to ask what if you tax the value of the stock at the time that he uses it as collateral so in a weird way you’re saying if you’re putting up your stock portfolio as collateral for a loan we have been considering that realized because you’re using it

taxing unrealized gains would be a very slippery slope. but making a law where you are not allowed to borrow against stocks would stop this tax avoidance loophole

Totally against it! That said, selling $100 bn of Tesla stock won’t crash the market - it would put pressure on Tesla itself but it’s also not sold in one block.

It’s scary that $100B would crash the market - there’s over $50T in the US market.
