My uncle drowned just before he turned 2. I want you to know that freak accidents happen in any family. Even if you had a pool gate, it could’ve gotten propped open. I’m close with a family with 4 little kids and they have a pool net that is frequently uncovered. Many people do not have a traditional pool gate (which you are advocating for which is amazing). Many parents I know have turned their backs on their 3 year olds for longer than 10 minutes, especially with a baby sibling. I know moral police are going to say they would never leave their child for that period of time, but with a newborn and only one adult home, it can be very hard to keep track of time. This was not neglect this was a young father who lost track of time and will regret that for the rest of his life. I know because my grandma blamed herself for my uncle’s passing until the day she died. She wasn’t even home. My mom wishes so much she would have forgiven herself. I know the guilt is hard to bear, but try to remember this tragedy is so common for a reason; it’s fast and silent. You’re doing amazing Emilie. I hope you and Brady forgive yourselves in time, at least in part; I’m sure everyone who knew and loved Trigg already has. Trigg in Heaven certainly has. Because being a parent to young kids is hard. Protecting them at all times is impossible. Nobody who is mentally sane blames you or Brady. Be gentle with yourself. You’re not alone. ❤️
