It’s fantastic to have choices in Texas. And… schools have protocols including nurses on staff in the event something does happen. The 504 plan puts measures in place to protect the student and may include EpiPens the student may carry (also available at the nurses station). For example Students with diabetes are permitted their phone through the school day to track their insulin levels. Other students are not permitted cell phone use during class time. Specific medical and mental health needs are listed in the 504 plan that aims to care for the individual while still providing a sense of normalcy to others in attendance.

So how do they accommodate children with severe allergies? I get it, packing nut free lunches can be tricky. Would you feel differently if it was your child with the severe allergy? Thankfully none of my kids have severe allergies, nevertheless I honour the policy to keep others safe.

My kids aren’t allergic to peanuts but I’m completely fine with it not being allowed in primary schools. Why take the chance when it can be dangerous, especially elementary school aged kids. They can have nuts in high school.
