@jenniferspringceramics: I love sharing my process, especially with slipcasting, because so many people just aren’t familiar with it. It’s usually not something that gets taught much in pottery or ceramics classes, so there’s a lot of mystery and misconceptions around it. I try to share what I can because this is how I spend most of my days making work, and honestly I find the whole process pretty meditative. There’s such a rhythm to casting, cleaning pieces up, attaching handles, all of it. Carving is definitely still my favorite part though. That’s always the most satisfying for me. Glazing, on the other hand… not my favorite. I save basically all of my glazing until right before a release and then spend one very long week glazing nonstop just to get through everything at once. This green I developed honestly took a while to figure out because green is such an intense pigment. If I add even a little too much into the slip, it stains my molds really badly, which definitely happened during my first round of testing these. So I’ve been slowly adjusting the pigment over time to get it where I want it. And now I’m somehow at the point where I want to make another green. I already have two, so I guess I’m just in a green phase right now, which is funny because green isn’t even my favorite color, it’s Blue. I really don’t know why I’m so obsessed with green lately? Over the last several months I’ve introduced a bunch of new colors, and right now I’m mostly trying to refine how I release work so I can have more pieces available in the same color during each release. For this next one I’m focusing more on greens and reds with a smaller amount of blues mixed in. I’ll keep rotating colors around and doing my best to keep up with what everyone is excited about, which I’m super appreciative of. And obviously I’ll still always be making other pieces too, these are just the ones getting the most attention right now. #pottery #ceramics #handmadeceramics #contemporaryceramics #handcarved
