@brado87: Exclusion from higher education is a largely structural knowledge problem not an aspiration problem.

Colonialism is real. My Bachelor of Social Work at Deakin has stressed the importance of de-colonising our beliefs, actions, and professional practice. I hope to be part of things improving, going forward.

It’s so fucking expensive, I don’t want to be in so much debt, I can’t afford that debt even with a scholarship.

I’m in school but went to an open day last wk- it’s a lot of pressure to be 1st to try Uni. Yes we want to represent and hold positions to make change but I agree with you it’s seeing other First Nations inspire..that’s why I’m thinking if they can maybe I can

I work at RMIT and I think the Ngarara Willim Centre does a really great great job at welcoming students in. I’ve interviewed a bunch of students who all said connecting with the centre has been key to their success at uni.

If I could keep a roof over my head and study I would, but capitalism doesn’t want me to have an education ❤️💛🖤

My best education came from a Aboriginal elder that was a great mentor for me

I work in the advertising space in production, currently the buzz word is “diversity”… but the amount of times I jump on a briefing call where the faces are anything but their target demo is intriguing… for these brands, they know they need to speak to a broader audience and start representing the true faces of Australia, but for the most part it feels like a tick box exercise…

Oohh this is a very challenging issue for the greater community. I agree with you however this is a long term view as there are many other issues that need to be tackled, and marketing should be tackling these (but someone has to pay for it). And university is not the ends to the means that is seems… what about trades…? I did it with a bunch of very challenging bunch of kids… this is a very very packed it loaded question.

That’s why I did my Masters in Indigenous studies not in a mainstream University as they don’t cater for our needs

i was the first in my family to graduate uni. i considered dropping out many times because i was constantly tokenised and experienced micro-aggressions often.

I think this is one part of the problem, other aspects to consider would be the class system at uni that no one wants to acknowledge. The universities gaslight people to thinking that degrees are achieved because your smart when in actual fact they are achieved because you have access to people who can help you get there in conjunction with your detemination for the most part. Its all well and good to have more mob in universities and we have some of the most outstanding blak academics already but unless universities are willing to front more financial support for students for living expenses to complete there degrees, minimise financial constrainst regarding how and when indigenous research teams spend and increase access to indigenous mentors, no one is going to get degrees or finish them. Not all mob have privileges and have to balance family as well. Its refreshing that you speak about this, as I dont think it is discussed enough. thank you

Seven years into my law degree at ECU and supported by KK Student Success and a Scholarship. The biggest thing I've seen with Indigenous law students is the passion for law and wanting to create social change, go to protests etc but realising the reality of the legal field is a culture shock of its own. Mixed with the other factors that are barriers or make it harder to stay enrolled and it makes it very hard for Indigenous law students to make it through their degree.

You start by saying you don’t like it framed as ‘a problem that needs to fixed’, then you go on to say it’s a problem that needs to fixed.
