So these flew regularly when I was a kid. After the wall came down, the need for them diminished. They were nearing the end of their service life, despite not having a modern replacement. Shortly before Desert Shield, they scheduled 2 final flights. The final flight ended up being only one of the two, due to a maintenance issue. The crew flew from LA to Washington DC to deliver it to the Smithsonian. They arrived in JUST over an hour. Imagine.

More then a few times the engines didn’t uncouple and the jet engine over reved the V8s and scattered them lol

So, even if you landed at a Foreign Air Base… London, Germany, … You need the special fuel, pilots rest, and Start Carts! SR-71 couldn’t take off from anywhere.

I love this beauty. I remember the model kit back in the mid 60’s . One sits on the deck of the Intrepid in Manhattan!

yep. They actually phased them out because ground crews reportedly ran them more than they were supposed to because they enjoyed the sound
