THE NIGHT KENYA WILL NEVER FORGET — ST. KIZITO, 1991 On the night of 13 July 1991, what began as unrest among students at St. Kizito Mixed Secondary School in Meru would become one of the darkest chapters in Kenya’s education history. The school was home to hundreds of young students whose biggest concerns should have been their education, friendships and dreams for the future. But that night, everything changed. Following a student protest, violence broke out and male students stormed the girls' dormitories. In the chaos that followed, 19 young girls lost their lives, while 71 others were sexually assaulted. Behind those numbers were daughters, sisters, classmates and friends — young lives with families waiting for them to return home. The tragedy shocked Kenya and attracted national and international attention. The school was subsequently closed as investigations continued, while several students were arrested in connection with the incident. But perhaps the most important part of this story is not simply remembering what happened. It is remembering the people who were affected. More than three decades later, the St. Kizito tragedy remains part of Kenya's history and a painful reminder of the devastating consequences of violence and the importance of protecting young people. Some stories are difficult to remember, but forgetting them does not change what happened. We remember the 19 who never came home. We remember the survivors. We remember the families. We remember St. Kizito. 13 July 1991 — Never forgotten. 🕊️ #StKizito #StKizito1991 #KenyaHistory
