Crown-of-thorns starfish (COTS) are a massive problem for coral reefs because they are voracious coral predators. While native to the Indo-Pacific, population explosions—or "outbreaks"—allow these starfish to consume vast swathes of living coral faster than the reef can naturally recover, leading to severe ecological and coastal damage.
