If it’s not documented, it didn’t happen. And if the school has it, you have a right to it. Under Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, parents have the right to inspect and review educational records. Not some of them. All of them. Here are the top 5 pieces of documentation you should ALWAYS be asking for: 1. Service logs Not what they say they provided. What they actually documented. You are looking for dates, minutes, type of service, and provider. Compare this to the IEP. Missing minutes = potential denial of FAPE. 2. Raw data on IEP goals Progress reports are summaries. You want the actual data collection. How often is data taken? Who is taking it? Where is it stored? If they can’t show you the data, they can’t prove progress. 3. Attendance and discipline records This includes removals, early pick-ups, “parent requested” dismissals, and suspensions. Patterns matter. These records often tell a very different story than what is said in meetings. 4. Communication logs and internal emails Yes, you can request emails about your child. This is where you often find the truth about what the team knew, when they knew it, and what they chose not to do. 5. Draft IEPs and evaluation reports BEFORE meetings Meaningful parent participation is not a suggestion, it is required under IDEA. Showing up to a meeting and seeing everything for the first time is not meaningful participation. Documentation is how you protect your child’s rights. It connects facts to violations. It turns “we think” into “we can prove.” Ask for it. In writing. Every time. #fape #504plan #specialeducation #ieprights #advocate
