@dw.africa: Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote is now leaning toward Kenya rather than Tanzania as the preferred location for a proposed East African oil refinery that could process up to 650,000 barrels of crude oil per day, according to an interview published by the Financial Times. The planned refinery, estimated to cost between $15 billion and $17 billion, would mirror the scale of Dangote’s refinery in Lagos, currently Africa’s largest single-train refinery. Dangote said Kenya’s port infrastructure gives it a significant advantage over Tanzania’s proposed site in Tanga. “I'm leaning more towards Mombasa because Mombasa has a much larger, deeper port,” he said. He also pointed to Kenya’s market size while comparing the two East African economies, saying: “Kenyans consume more. It's a bigger economy.” The remarks signal a possible shift from earlier discussions among East African countries about locating a regional refinery at Tanzania’s Tanga port, an initiative publicly discussed by Kenyan President William Ruto #dwafricasocialmedia #kenyantiktok🇰🇪 #dangote #tanzaniatiktok #ugandatiktok

I'm asking out of ignorance, why can't the government just build its own refinery insteadon depending on someone else's company?

Why can’t GoK lease the refinery in Changamwe instead of building a new one? Or even better get into a partnership with Dangote to revive the refinery? Because the facility is there, and has been a deadweight. Help me understand this?

I'm not sure if a joint refinery will bring any significant economic impact for the host country 🤔

Tanzania already has a pipeline to Zambia that is rarely talked about. also has agreement of more advanced pipeline from the coast to Zambia and Malawi. after the standard gauge railway it is inevitable for Tanzania not to build pipeline across the country for fuel distribution towards Lake Tanganyika where it connects to market with population of more than 100m people

Speaking from a regional integration perspective and politics, it is best for the refinery to be built in Tanzania. Kenya will still reap the same benefits and also accrue a lot of goodwill and trust from the neighbouring countries. The currency of trust will lead to accelerated regional integration which good business for everyone.
