The case has magnets in specific spots that turns/puts the AirPod max into a sleep mode state. I think your headphones stopped working because it stayed on and drained the battery to zero too often which eventually kills the battery for good.

It happened to me too, my AirPods Max wouldn’t connect for several days. Charge it, then press both buttons on your AirPods max for a long time, at least 30 seconds. It resets your AirPods and it starts working again

The biggest thing with apm is one of the wires in the cup will eventually wear out after they are rotated too much, mine lasted a year & 1/2 then they broke because of that
