Its population is about 45 thousand people. Initially, on the site of the modern city there was a small village of Vaenga, founded at the end of the 19th century. It was a quiet, sparsely populated settlement on the shores of the Kola Bay. A sharp turn in history occurred in the 1930s, when the USSR began to actively develop the Northern Fleet. The location turned out to be strategically important — the deep-sea, ice-free Kola Bay was ideally suited for ship accommodation. In 1933, a naval base, airfield, and infrastructure began to be built in Waeng. By 1951, the settlement received the status of a city and was renamed Severomorsk. From that moment on, it became a closed city, the center of the fleet, inaccessible to the public. There are several ways to get a pass to Severomorsk: service, training, and the presence of relatives who live or work. If you do not have such options, then you can get a tourist pass, which will take about a month to wait. For tourist purposes, people mostly come here to walk on the main square, see the local monument “Alyosha”, visit a couple of museums, including the submarine “K-21”. And also visit the Aviation Museum in village Safonovo.
