@metrorichmondzoo: This Mother’s Day, we’re celebrating one very special mom. 🦒 Yesterday morning, Chrissy, a 14-year-old Reticulated giraffe, gave birth to a healthy baby girl after a quick 27-minute active labor. The remarkable birth was witnessed by zoo staff and guests visiting the zoo. Chrissy’s story makes this moment even more meaningful. Born at the zoo in 2011, she was bottle-fed by zoo staff as a calf due to maternal neglect. As you might imagine, bottle-feeding a growing giraffe calf comes with unique challenges, but our efforts were successful. She grew into a healthy giraffe, integrated into the herd, and has now welcomed her third calf. Today, Chrissy is a calm, protective, and nurturing mother herself.
