@history.section: Before 1979, Iran looked like this. Under Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, Iran was one of the most progressive countries in the Middle East. Women attended university, wore what they wanted, and worked freely alongside men. Tehran had a booming economy, vibrant nightlife, and a growing middle class. In 1979, the Islamic Revolution changed everything overnight. The Shah was overthrown and Iran became an Islamic theocratic republic.
