I’m 4 weeks postpartum and I cried last night over something I didn’t even realize was bothering me this much. My best friend stopped inviting me places. Not because we had a fight. Not because anything happened between us. She just…stopped asking. Before the baby, she’d text me constantly. “Want to grab dinner?” “Come over.” “We’re getting drinks Friday if you want to come.” “Target?” Half the time I’d say no anyway 😂 But I was always asked. Then I had my baby. And the invitations slowly disappeared. At first I didn’t notice because those first couple weeks were such a blur. Feeding. Diapers. Visitors. Trying to sleep. Trying to figure out breastfeeding. Trying to remember what day it was. But then last night I was feeding the baby around 3am and scrolling on my phone. I saw my best friend had gone out with some of our friends. And I felt this stupid little punch in my stomach. Because nobody asked me. The thing is… I probably wouldn’t have gone. That’s what made me feel ridiculous for being upset. I’m exhausted. I’m four weeks postpartum. My baby eats constantly. Getting myself out of the house currently requires the logistical planning of a military operation. 😂 But I still wanted to be invited. I wanted the option to say no. I wanted someone to remember that I’m still me. So I wrote about it anonymously on this app. I said: “4 weeks postpartum. Best friend is at our bar rn. She didn’t invite me bc she knows I can’t. Kinda feels like the old me died.” Even typing that felt dramatic. Because I KNOW why she didn’t invite me. She probably thought she was being considerate. She probably didn’t want me to feel pressured. She probably assumed I’d rather be home with the baby. And honestly? She was probably right about all three. But it still hurt. Then a mom from Florida replied. She said she’d felt the same way. Her friends had stopped inviting her places too because everyone assumed she couldn’t go. And she said something basically like: We didn’t die. Old us might be gone for now, but the new us rocks too. 😭 That got me. Because I think one of the strangest parts of becoming a mom is how quickly everyone starts treating you like your entire identity changed overnight. And in some ways it did. There is a tiny human sleeping on my chest who has rearranged basically every part of my life. I love her more than I knew I could love another person. I don’t want my old life back. But I also don’t want every piece of the woman I was before her to disappear. I still want the text. I still want the invitation. I still want someone to say: “We’re going out Friday. I know you probably can’t come, but you’re obviously invited.” Let ME say no. Let me complain that I’m jealous. 😂 Let me tell you to have a margarita for me. Just don’t quietly decide that I’m not part of things anymore because I had a baby. After that mom replied, I noticed three other moms had sent me little hugs too. California. England. Portugal. Three complete strangers awake somewhere in the world while I was sitting there feeding my baby. And somehow these women I’d never met understood exactly why an invitation I would’ve declined could hurt so much. Motherhood is weird like that. Sometimes you’re grieving things you don’t actually want back. You don’t want your baby gone. You don’t want to rewind your life. You just want reassurance that the person you were before motherhood still exists somewhere inside the person you’re becoming. So please keep inviting the new mom. Even if she says no ten times. Even if she leaves after 45 minutes. Even if she brings the baby. Even if she doesn’t come for six months. Keep asking. Because sometimes the invitation isn’t really about going. Sometimes it’s just someone saying: We still see you. You’re still one of us. 💛 #mom #baby #momlife #MomsofTikTok #momtok
