The Iya Vine Bridge (known locally as Iya‑no‑Kazurabashi) is a traditional suspension bridge made almost entirely of woven vines that spans the Iya River deep within the mountainous Iya Valley in Tokushima Prefecture, Japan. Unlike modern bridges of steel and concrete, Iya Vine Bridge is constructed by weaving together hardy vines (traditionally shirakuchikazura or kiwi vine) to form a long, flexible suspension span. Although the bridge looks fragile and ancient, modern safety measures such as steel cables hidden within the vine ropes have been added so visitors can still enjoy crossing without undue risk. 🌿 The exact origins of the bridge are unknown and wrapped in folklore. One legend says that members of the defeated Heike (Taira) clan fleeing the Genpei War in the late 12th century built such vine bridges so they could quickly cut them down to stop pursuing enemies. 📜 Today, the Iya Vine Bridge is more than an old crossing; it’s a designated Important Tangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan and one of the country’s “Three Unusual Bridges.” Because of its unique design and deep connection to regional history, the bridge draws hundreds of thousands of visitors each year who come to experience its thrilling sway, explore the scenic valley, and learn about traditional Japanese rural life. 🌏 Visitors say the bridge sways gently with each step, and the gaps between vine woven planks give glimpses down into the river below a thrilling experience even with safety measures in place.
