The noise was created by wind-driven mechanical sirens: * Small propellers (wind-driven rotors) were mounted on the fixed landing gear. * When the aircraft entered a dive attack, the rushing air spun these rotors. * The rotors powered a mechanical siren, producing the terrifying high-pitched wail. So: 👉 It was not engine noise. 👉 It was purely mechanical and powered by airflow. 😨 Why was it used? The main purpose was psychological warfare: * To cause panic among enemy troops before the bombs hit. * To disrupt defensive organization. * To amplify the psychological impact of the attack. Many early-war accounts describe the sound as extremely frightening to soldiers on the ground. ❌ Why was it discontinued? * It created aerodynamic drag, reducing speed. * It made the aircraft even more noticeable and easier to target with anti-aircraft fire. * As the war progressed, performance became more important than psychological effect.

My Grandfather served with Germany in WW II. To be told by him he sat inside the cockpit of a Stuka and a Messerschmitt Bf 109, still makes me so envious / jealous.
