I think to properly appreciate cultures instead of appropriating them, we have to acknowledge them, know our history, use correct names and don’t try to profit off of someone else’s culture

As someone who was into Korean and Japanese culture in the 2010s, it’s so cool to see Asian street style finally getting its flowers and being appreciated over here! I also think it links quite organically with the increased popularity of brands like Adidas Originals too, it feels like a logical next step considering how much streetwear has been in fashion in the last few years

Whilst I think you’re right about East Asian fashion being on the rise; it’s also because fashion is cyclical. Nike rifts and mandarin style jackets were huge about 20 years ago in the UK (I owned both). It was probably appropriation then and hopefully appreciation this time round!

There was a big craze for “oriental” (as it was called back then) during two periods, mid 18th century and late 19th century. Which is why in charity shops we often find ceramics and china and other interiors pieces from east Asia. I believe it’s surging again now especially with access to the internet, people are more aware of fashion and entertainment from east Asia and starting to appreciate it as actually good and cool trendy and are probably inspired by it and not think of it as low worthy and untrendy as the perception was portrayed in the past and made fun of for. I like to think it is changing people’s perception of east Asia and that it can be appreciated because it is beautiful. I think in the past it might have been done in a more culturally appropriation way as they saw the culture as a costume and unserious way. People from east Asia (like myself) are always happy to share our culture as long as it is not mocked - from how business re markets the product and how people choose to dress/style and represent it

I don’t know if it was because we had a Chinese girl in our class, or a Dutch thing but I remember as a kid a lot of us had those traditional Chinese dresses and would wear them from time to time? It’s interesting to see it come back in more street style type clothes twenty years later 😄 It’s hard with the appropriation/appreciation thing, I think that mostly it’s appreciation if you wear it because you genuinely like it and not wear it as a costume? Of course with the right amount of research so you don’t wear temple-type clothing to a rave or something, but you get the point 😂 I think my school very much fell into a weird mix of “wow this looks so cool” and (a well-meaning) “I’m dressing up as a Chinese girl” so I’m not quite sure where lil me would’ve fallen in the appreciation/appropriation thing at the time 😂
