Two Labradors Two VERY different dogs Genetics matter more than most people realise. When we talk about dog behaviour, we are not starting with a blank slate. Dogs are born with inherited predispositions that influence arousal levels, sensitivity to the environment, motivation, stamina, persistence, and the types of activities they are naturally driven towards. 🐾 That means two dogs of the same breed can still have very different behavioural needs depending on the line they come from and what they were bred to do. This is why behaviour should never be viewed in isolation from genetics. 🧠 A dog bred for work may need far more than a daily walk. They may need structured training, problem solving, scent work, retrieval outlets, purposeful engagement, and enough mental and physical stimulation to regulate the nervous system well. 🎾👃🧩 A dog from calmer companion lines may still enjoy activity and enrichment, but often has a very different baseline in terms of intensity, arousal, and environmental sensitivity. 🌿 Neither is better. But both need to be understood properly. 🤍 So much of what gets labelled as “difficult behaviour” is actually the result of unmet needs, chronic frustration, or a lifestyle that does not match the dog’s inherited behavioural profile. ⚠️ The more we understand what genetics has shaped, the better we can meet that dog’s needs ethically, effectively, and compassionately. ✨ Because good behaviour support is not about expecting every dog to fit the same mould.
