The shuttle wasn't due to a temperature failure of a seal, it was the position of the seal in the thinner outer body instead of the inner sleeve. The outer then opened slightly, leaked and the pressure drop created ice to form. Then it gradually opened slightly again and again, subsequent leaks created a domino effect until complete failure.
