@japanese_life_view: 別府はただの温泉街ではない。 Beppu is not just a hot spring town. One reason it developed so much lies in the sea. It may be hard to imagine today but in the past ships were the main way people traveled across Kyushu. Beppu prospered as a port town connecting people from Kansai and Shikoku while also sitting on one of Japan’s richest hot spring resources. Hot springs alone exist everywhere in Japan but Beppu had the rare combination of hot springs and maritime access. After the war the government promoted it as an international tourism city and it became a classic destination for school trips and company travel. The steam rising across the city is not only beautiful scenery. It may also be the visible memory of the history this place has built over time.
