@finnishwithheidi: I’ve spent thousands of hours in my life learning foreign languages. I started my Finnish language learning actually the day I was born. Since my school days I’ve been working on English, Swedish, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Russian to name a few. I consider myself fluent only in two of these, plus Finnish, but it’s ok. I even studied years at university to understand better how languages work, how to analyse language as a form of art, and how to express myself with a high degree of fluency. I still make mistakes and learn, and it’s ok. I have spent thousands of hours in Finnish language teaching: learning how the quirky grammar works and how to explain it to foreigners the clearest way possible, how to support their speaking skills, how to create clear Finnish material in different forms (very often in languages that are not even my native tongue). When someone hears me speaking and just shrugs and says “you’re just good at languages”, IT STINGS. And also when someone thinks I can handle them fluency in 3 months or something of that sort like it was some sort of a speedrun trophy… I always have to think how can bring them back to Earth without telling them any of the things I just told you. Sorry, it had to be said. (Not sorry.)
