That is interesting, I had always assumed Indigenous people were much more accepting of LGBTQ than other communities, perhaps because of sista-girls and also an assumption that Indigenous communities were less impacted by colonial, patriarchal ideas. As a Palestinian I also know that marginalised groups tend to understand bigotry in all its forms better, and are more likely to show solidarity (or at least tolerance and respect) with other marginalised people. Thanks for raising these important issues.

AFL is a place of work. They represent sponsors. Being homophobic or racist should END their jobs

Any Indigenous mob having difficulty with LGBT+ community need to realise sistergirls exist on the Tiwi Islands and have place in traditional life, its against culture to harm our own

You Got This :
To your comment about being upset about racial slurs I thought of one of my highschool friends who said to me after the same sex marriage plebiscite "My sexuality is now more accepted than my race". Not advocating in any way that people should be using homophobic slurs, at all, however, maybe they focus on advocating against what they are not accepted as, that is being black and Indigenous.
Or, maybe it's like the line from Mississippi Burning "If you're not better than a (racial slur), then who are you better than?". I take that to insinuate that to 'think better' of oneself a person punches down to assert a sense of 'status'. Indigenous identity is constructed within colonial thinking based on theological and skewed scientific 'findings' that being black is innately inferior and practically sub-human, so think at least I'm not gay. I don't support or condone that thinking but maybe that's the genesis of the attitude? I hope that makes sense.

As a queer person looking at what’s going on. It does seem like an indigenous person becoming the scape goat for language players are already throwing around. I’m not saying to excuse homophobic slurs. But it feels to me the outrage is larger than what their white peers would get.

There's also a lot of toxic masculinity within Aboriginal communities that really fuels a lot of homophobia

Sometimes I think we go too deep on things too, over analysing, lots of who’s responsible and why and lots of effort to blame. I’m perhaps simple minded but my method is back to basics in the meantime (while still studying / researching, understanding and learning) but first side note I believe society loves it when it’s a black person that stuffs up like this or does something wrong, they love it - use it and will run with it.. of course. But race separately in this instance from the homophobia/slurs in afl. AFL is a workplace, big bucks, public facing and does have a responsibility and duty of care to lead the way… ideally they should have 0 tolerance. Sacked, done - over with. This goes for racism too!! Any of it. Just a simple minded opinion on this, understanding it is deeper, wider and something we can’t solve easily and it’s the whole of society’s job, not only AFL. But when it comes to afl employees/players etc - why not come down hard and demonstrate 0 tolerance. Tricky one
