@wordswithbones: Is it possible that fried chicken, one of the most popular foods in Korean, only came to the peninsular 70 years ago? We have to do a bit of a dive into Korean food history, and the global history of chicken, to find out. #koreanculture #koreanfriedchicken #foodhistory #koreanhistory #BlackHistory
deep frying food with flour existed way before the USA was a country.

I am quite sure that a lot of cultures fry chicken.
But "fried chicken" as we know it is very specific.
Not all chicken that has been fried is "fried chicken."

Modern day Korean fried chicken is really a combination of techniques. The brine is different to begin with. They also incorporated the Japanese/Portuguese frying method with an inner layer before introducing the outer layer of that extra crispy shell from the Black American southern dish.

I don’t think Alton cut down her point. He gave credit to the people who inspired Koreans to embrace making this dish and adapting it into their culture.

At First korean chicken was just chicken fried by it self. Its called 통닭. Until Early 70s its about just whole chicken fried with oil. After wheat flour and cheap cooking oil was given large quantities as ration? Rescue food? Came after korean war and people learned how to use it as daily food. Thats about late 70s to 88. kfc arrived to korea and started to make chicken with flour became more common. But ingredients as butter milk and spices was hard to get, and still is till today. First flour fried chicken is made with wet batter giving smooth texture, then they found out powdered batter was secrete for the crispy chicken. So to sum up, you can say the first flour fried chicken was introduced to korean via gi’s from african amercian, but the first introducing to the mass was by whole fried chicken without the batter, and then after kfc, flour fried chicken became more common, but the secrete to the crispy fried chicken was found after time when the fried chicken became the best go to menu for going out for dinner.

Kkwabaegi is generally believed to have made its way to the Korean peninsula around the end of Joseon Dunasty through the immigration of several Chinese nationals to Korea; if I'm not mistaken, it was still treated as a holiday/special occasions treat for a long time because of the high cost of what flour until the mid '50s. When it comes to Jeon, it's generally believed that it was made with rice or buckwheat flour for village people, and the wheat flour was generally saved for the upper classes and the king. Please look into those more, research on them is so interesting:D

I think it's more correct to say ingredients became abundantly available after the war thanks to the American military presence (along with cheese, butter, canned meats etc ..), frying technique was adopted and improved to Korean tastes with different seasonings and became something unique and popularized by K culture export all around the world. Alton's comment sounded dismissive, although I am sure it wasn't his intention but his comment was to make sure to attribute and provide historical context. Either way, ALL fried chicken is tasty, no matter from where!
