POV: You Arrive in London in 1348 #london #History #HistoryTime In London, 1348, the Great Pestilence begins to take hold. Today we usually call it the Black Death, but Londoners at the time knew it as the Great Pestilence or the Great Mortality. The disease reached England in 1348 and entered London later that year, spreading through one of the most crowded and important cities in medieval Europe. There were no plague doctor masks in 1348. No beaked costumes, no modern medicine, no hospitals as we would understand them. Londoners faced the outbreak with prayer, household remedies, fear, rumor, and the sounds of church bells. Markets still opened. Boats still came up the Thames. People still tried to work, trade, and survive, even as more houses fell silent. By early 1349, the death toll was so overwhelming that emergency burial grounds were opened outside the city walls, including at East Smithfield. Archaeologists have found evidence of carefully arranged mass burials there, not chaotic horror scenes, but organized rows of shrouded bodies laid into trenches by people trying to preserve dignity in an impossible moment. This video imagines what it might have felt like to walk through London as the city realized the sickness was no longer a distant rumor. No plague doctors. No fantasy London. Just mud, bells, smoke, prayer, and fear.
