I think it may be just the opposite. Think about it, Neil as the moon, he’s still escaping, changing identities and surviving at a distance, he is visible but only in parts, and even when he starts to trust his team he’s still orbiting around them without letting them totally in. Andrew is the astronaut because he is the only one who sees the moon as it is and doesn’t expect it get down to earth, Andrew accepts his caos, his silences, his lies and his constant need to run. The idea of orbiting is something that describes their relationship perfectly, Neil orbits around Andrew looking for safety and a partner and he reciprocates. The song is from Andrew’s perspective as the astronaut, and it shows the way that he loves: with a constant presence and actions instead of vocal declarations. Andrew looks at Neil as the moon that he can’t seem to grasp, because he is the guy who’s not medicated anymore and discovers that Neil isn’t a pipe dream.
