Black women endure more pain That’s what the people who enslaved them believed in the 1800s And that belief shaped medicine Look at this painting It seems calm Respectful Like a breakthrough moment in history A doctor stands confidently Men observe And a young woman sits quietly on the table But this isn’t what it seems The woman in this painting is Anarcha Westcott An enslaved Black woman in the 1840s After a traumatic childbirth She developed a severe condition that left her in constant pain She needed care Instead She became a test subject The man in this painting is Dr J Marion Sims Often called the father of modern gynecology He performed surgery on Anarcha again and again Dozens of times Without anesthesia At the time Anesthesia was not yet widely used for procedures like this And beliefs like this That Black women could endure more pain made it easier to justify Anarcha wasn’t the only one Other enslaved women were also subjected to these surgeries They did not have the ability to truly consent And while these procedures contributed to medical advancements Their suffering was not recognized This painting shows a moment of progress But it leaves out the truth behind it Because for Anarcha There was no moment of triumph Only survival
From BLACK to BROWN 🤎 Sometimes that “temporary” color has plans to stay a little longer than you expected 😂 Going lighter can be a journey, especially when a client has been using black rinses or semi-permanent color. Something being called temporary doesn’t always mean it will lift away easily. The color history matters, and we have to work with what the hair allows. For this transformation, I used @moroccanoilpro Blonde Voyage with 15 volume. After removing the foils, I added a little water and gently emulsified the remaining lightener, working it into the root area to finish the lift before shampooing and moving into toning. My formula: 🤎 Color Calypso 4CH at the roots 🤎 A mix of 6CH + 7CH through the midlengths and ends The brown could have taken a little deeper in certain areas. Processing had shifted the porosity along the strands, so the color deposited differently from one area to another. That variation gave us this multidimensional finish, and honestly, I’m loving the dimension! We decided to let her enjoy it for two weeks and see how she feels living in this new shade. If she wants a more seamless finish, we’ll deepen it by one level. Sometimes you have to give the client room to experience the look before deciding on the next move. Right now, this brown has movement, softness, and a little personality of its own. The Cut added a little summin too with the swoop- de- doop in the front for movement 😝 When I’m shaping short hair, I’m thinking about how it frames her face, where we need softness, and how the pieces fall together. I love a shape you can play with. Sweep it over, bring it forward, let it have a little flava ! What y’all think ? Is this a dope Fall Color for season ?!
