Does a wife have to obey her husband absolutely? Many people believe: “A wife should simply listen to her husband. Whatever he says goes.” But is that really what the Bible teaches? Let us go back to Scripture and understand God’s will. First, a woman is not a man’s servant, but a helper and companion. Genesis 2:18 says: “And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.” KJV God created Eve so that she and Adam could accompany one another, support one another, and face life together. So from the very beginning, marriage was not meant to be one person giving orders while the other could only obey. Second, “he shall rule over thee” is not a privilege for a husband to control his wife. Genesis 3:16, says: “Thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.” KJV But this statement comes after Adam and Eve sinned. It describes the imbalance that would enter the relationship between husband and wife after sin entered the world. It is not telling men: “You may control your wife however you want.” Rather, a husband has a particular responsibility within the family: to help manage the affairs of the home, to carry burdens and responsibilities, and to take responsibility in leadership. The husband takes the lead, and the wife supports him. When problems arise, the two should discuss them together. Third, the Bible gives responsibilities to wives, and it also gives responsibilities to husbands. Ephesians 5:21 says: “Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.” KJV A wife should respect her husband, but a husband is also told: “Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it.” Ephesians 5:25, KJV So a husband is not a tyrant in the home, and a wife is not a voiceless subordinate. A marriage that truly pleases God is one in which husband and wife respect one another, support one another, discuss things together, pray together, and seek God’s will together. Marriage is not about competing over who has the higher position. It is about two people learning together to submit to Christ.
