I’ve been in so many companies and getting things done never gets you noticed but talking about it does.

I lived this way for years. "Just handle it. Just get it done."
And I built a business that completely depended on me handling and getting everything done.
Obama's advice works if you're climbing someone else's ladder. If you're building your own? You have to think differently.

Facts! FITFO (figure it the fuck out) attitude, action it, and every single time you say “I’ll look into it”, mark your calendar with a reminder and FOLLOW UP ALWAYS. Half the time the person asking the question you’re looking into forgets and is surprised that you followed through.

So true. My first full time job, my boss was struggling to do his work. I didn’t complain about him, I just chipped in to help him because somebody needed to. A few months later when they fired him, I was shocked when they came to me to ask if i (the kid a year out of college) would take the job.

Agreed. As a manager, you give a new employee a small task and see how they do. They do it well, they get a project. More responsibility and better deliverables lead to a better resume and either a promotion or just another job. There is truly no more valuable employee than someone who can just think critically, know what questions to ask, develop a plan, and execute with confidence. The task can be big or small, the process is the same.
