Leaked internal letters and messages from South Korea’s Unification Church, also called the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification, reveal its alleged role in influencing Nepal’s politics through funding, election coordination, and close ties with senior leaders across party lines. Documents obtained by the Korean Centre for Investigative Journalism, Newstapa, show communications between Nepal Family Party founder Ek Nath Dhakal and senior Church officials during Nepal’s 2017 to 2022 elections. The correspondence includes requests for large sums of money, at least 500,000 dollars at a time, plus monthly expenses, to support election campaigns, party operations, and the UML. The leaked letters name former prime ministers Madhav Kumar Nepal, K P Oli, and Baburam Bhattarai, showing efforts to cultivate influence within Nepal’s communist leadership. Emails describe Dhakal coordinating with UML leaders, seeking campaign financing, and negotiating his placement on the UML proportional representation list ahead of the 2017 elections. He later became a minister in Oli’s government. Documents also reveal that Dhakal organised the Asia Pacific Summit 2018 in Kathmandu, presided over by Hak Ja Han, wife of founder Sun Myung Moon. The summit, attended by leaders including Cambodia’s Hun Sen, sparked controversy in Nepal and introduced the term Holy Wine as a label for alleged Church-linked influence. The leaks show long-term plans to educate Nepali lawmakers in Church ideology, including proposed overseas trips and shaping political direction around Cheon Il Guk, the Church’s vision of a heavenly nation centred on family values. While the Nepal Family Party denies receiving foreign funding and calls the allegations a smear campaign, the Church claims the documents are unauthentic. South Korean prosecutors consider them key evidence in a bribery case against Hak Ja Han, raising questions about foreign religious influence, political financing, and Nepal’s democratic sovereignty ahead of upcoming elections. #money #news
