Why did you think you had a year to get her a gift?

I had 200 people at my wedding. I have no idea who gave me a gift and who didn’t and I sent thank you notes. Anyone who is tracking that is tacky.

I think it’s super rude to show up without a gift. They’re wrong for calling you out but you could have picked up a card on the way to the wedding. There’s no excuse.

I think everyone kind of messed up here. I would never show up to a wedding empty handed, but I would also never call someone out for not getting a gift. You never know what people are going through!

You are correct it is perfectly fine etiquette to send within 6 months but the sooner the better. What is EXTREMELY poor etiquette is to have family call and complain about you behind your back to other family members.

I’m fine, it’s fine :
You’re both in the wrong—you knew when the wedding was and had time to get a card and put money in it well before your busy week. And they should not have called you out on it.

I think it’s worse that they noticed right away who did and didn’t give them a gift. And then they basically tattled on you.

You do NOT have 6-12 months to give a wedding gift. Who on earth shows up to a WEDDING with no gift ?!?! On average you have 6-12 months notice BEFORE a wedding to organise a gift, having a busy week the week of, is no excuse

The wedding is the deadline I have never heard of someone making an excuse saying they’ve had the “busiest week” and forgetting to bring a present. You get an invite to the wedding usually at minimum 6 months - 1 year+ in advance so that is the time you have to prepare a gift. Just because you had one busy week doesn’t excuse you not preparing in time for the last year. That’s frankly ridiculous

I have never in my 46 years heard of a 1 year wedding gift etiquette. Ever. You bring it the day of or mail it the next day if you forgot it 😳

Is it an American thing to expect everyone to bring gifts to a wedding? In NZ I feel like gifts are welcomed and appreciated but not expected. People just literally want to share their special day with their loved ones.

The audacity of the bride/grooms parent to call your Mother. You have no obligation to give a gift at all when you attend a wedding.

You are wrong. You should have brought a card/gift. I’ve never heard the 6 months rule for wedding gifts. However, wedding gifts are optional so you’re not REQUIRED to bring one. It was equally rude of them to call you out
