People don’t know the difference between ophthalmologist, optometrist, and optician. I’ve only ever had an optician measure my PD

But actually the PD is the same in every frame and for the typ of lenses also 😅

PD stays the same frame to frame (you have different distance, intermediate, reading PDs tho), but in order for us to get the accurate focal point we also need something called the OC/SEG height and that does vary based on the frame. Think of the lens as a graph. PD is the X axis, OC is the Y axis. We need both to get the correct point 😊

Its on the phoropter, but always measured by the optician and the pd doesn’t vary. It does for the seg height though

Hi! Optician here. It’s my job, not the Docs 🥰 It’s also not required for Opticians to measure everyone taking their RX elsewhere/online. Most offices charge for PD as well.

why are we lying to people girl 😭 just say we don’t measure it bc we don’t want people using it to buy glasses online. If we’re being real we should measure PD to adjust the trial frame correctly for testing

PD is not part of a prescription - so, if there’s a fee for an optician to measure you (labor/an added service) by all means please pay for it 🫶🏼

Then they bring them in for us to check and get mad when we can’t fix them without charging

And it’s only one measurement. The ocular center or seg height is just as important and requires the frame to be on your face and adjusted to you.

I'm going to disagree because when I make an eye appt specifically to get my rx, yes they do the eye exam but they know the plan of me getting glasses and it's really irritating to go home and get online to look at frames and find ones I love but I can't order them until I go back again for the second time because they didn't give my FULL prescription. and I'd love to buy frames at my doctor appt but they had limited stock and nothing close to what I wanted shape wise.

PD is measured by the Optician who is fitting and providing you with glasses. Should you order online the websites will show you how you can take that measurement yourself. It

Word vomit. The PD is measured on the auto refractor that is used every eye exam for glasses.

I only get measured with software now. Ruler measurements are inaccurate.

Yes! Sometimes wrap also effects PD - had a pt come in with issues and we had to adjust his PD from usual distance PD due to the curve of the lenses

It's actually a requirement on the written prescription for the state of Alaska

It’s part of a glasses order, not part of the prescription. I feel like I explain this on the daily 😞

I’ll say it, unless I’m fabricating your glasses, I’m not doing someone else’s work. I’m an optician, and it’s MY job to take this measurement. To this doctors point, with respect to the doctors Rx, I may decided to change the fitting height and/or PD for a specific desired outcome. If you wanna go online you’re more than welcome to. The price is less, and you’re also eliminating the professional intervention.
