I understand East Asian cultures can be confusing to outsiders, so I’d like to offer some constructive feedback. North and South Korea share the same historical and traditional cultural foundation despite modern political division. Likewise, Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan are Han Chinese societies with shared traditions, writing systems, and cultural roots. The misunderstanding often comes from applying a European nation-state model to East Asia. In Europe, culture is usually tied to modern national borders, whereas East Asia has historically been divided more by macro regional and linguistic zones. For example, China contains major regional cultural spheres such as the Central Plains, Dongbei, Bashu, Hakka, Xiang, Jin, Huizhou, Jiangnan/Wu, Min, and Yue/Cantonese regions, alongside many non-Han cultures including Tibetans, Uyghurs, Mongols, Miao, and Dai. Japan also contains distinct historical-cultural regions such as the Yamato core, Ryukyuan Okinawa, and Ainu Hokkaido.
