I ate a Snickers bar every single day for 70 straight days. 🍫 How many of you knew about this from late 2015? I truly cannot believe it was that long ago. 🤯 The gist was: I underwent a 10-week bikini competition prep during which I ate a full-sized Snickers bar daily while dieting down, ultimately winning my natural pro card. (I have long since walked away from that world, and I wouldn’t do it again, but it was an interesting experience!) So. The part I wanted to discuss today was the phenomenon of food habituation. We know: ✅dietary restriction (particularly in terms of calories and/or food choices) is a predictor of binge eating ✅rigid restraint especially (as opposed to flexible restraint) does not seem to bode well for long-term eating behavior ✅interrupting the dietary restraint reduces the risk of binge eating ✅food habituation seems to be a legitimate (yet not super well-studied to date) phenomenon that occurs in individuals at varying rates to varying degrees Eating behavior is complex, so please don’t take this to mean I’m saying you should eat yourself sick for the next several months. I’m definitely not encouraging that. But for those of you who try to compensate for overeating / binge episodes by further restricting your food only to find yourself continuing the overeat/binge-restrict cycle, this is something to think about. ❤️ (I do acknowledge that during this particular Snickers experiment, I did control for total calorie intake, and thus it was not fully unconditional permission to eat. Even so, I did experience a distinct decrease in my enjoyment of the Snickers bar within a matter of weeks.) #FoodHabituation #EatingBehavior #UnconditionalPermissionToEat #nutritiontips #BingeEating
