@metrorichmondzoo: Immediately after birth, giraffe calves begin learning how to stand. In the wild, calves are especially vulnerable to predators, so standing quickly is critical for survival. 🦒 Watch how Chrissy helps her calf. At one point, she places her front hoof on the calf's leg to create a leverage point the calf can push against to rise. Chrissy also positions her leg behind the calf to support her as she learns to balance. This calf stood for the first time just 62 minutes after birth. Once standing, Chrissy nudges the calf with her legs to help the calf take her first steps. It's an awe-inspiring process to witness. Chrissy was one of the calmest animal moms we've seen during labor and delivery. She is very comfortable around people and well habituated to the sounds in her environment. The habitat shown here is a protected area often used for moms and young calves before they are ready to be introduced to the larger mixed-species grass habitat with other giraffes, antelope, birds, and a lake. #metrorichmondzoo #rva #giraffe
