Currently studying sociology at Howard, and in my social theory class we discussed E. Franklin Frazier’s critique of the black bourgeoise. What I found most interesting is his analysis of how parts of the black middle class collectivized off of building distance from the broader community in an attempt to assimilate to white american standards but will never be fully accepted by white america. I see how this individualistic ideology affects many of my peers at Howard who are infatuated with corporate america and I find it so pervasive to the black community as a whole.

I think about this all the time. It’s also why hip hop was our last big cultural contribution. We don’t live in close proximity to each other anymore. We have to now develop these places through intentional groups and collaboratives.

While we lost some collectiveness after integrating in part because of housing and not being in physical proximity to one another. To claim the black middle class lost all ideas of collectiveness is just factually inaccurate. Pew research shows that as black people make more money we donate a larger percentage of our income than any other race. That’s donating to nonprofits but mainly donating or giving to our familia networks.

Yep.. my dad is a full on republican capitalist and thinks poor Black people who didn't make it out of the hood like him are lazy, doesn't care about anything but his money and his immediate family, and constantly states as long as we're okay he doesn't care about the state of the world.. he is a retired cop and has been completely brainwashed into the system

What you’re getting at is the fact that Integration (levying the state power) deteriorated the free market and self agency and family building culture of the black community that existed prior to civil rights movement. Booker T Washington was always right. The collectivity you’re referring to amongst the black community that used to exist was a direct result of strong nuclear families and free market capitalism working within the communities. A collective consists of like minded individuals.

We never integrated. Have you ever heard of “white flight” or “redlining”? If you know about that you should know black people went to all black schools and lived in all black neighborhoods after the civil rights act was passed. Do you know anyone born in the 1970s and 80s? Ask them what color were their classmates and neighbors. I guarantee they were black

As much as I would love to agree. I think that the premise is wrong. There has always been class contradictions in black America. We really gotta understand that post emancipation, during reconstruction these same things manifested itself. Louisiana and the “creole” community aka elite blacks, were very much involved in things like brown v board. Not because they had solidarity with black freedmen (keep in mind freemen and freedmen are different people). But rather because yt supremacy in America did not allow for the natural class distinctions to happen in America like other places. They are only collective in their mind because yt people won’t separate them from us
