@financial_craic: I hate the trope of “cut out coffee” and you’ll be better off. It’s such a cop out and is focusing on the wrong things. I love coffee and actually enjoy the time I spend getting a coffee (shout out to some local favorites like @graft.coffee and @eistespressobar). You can make great coffee at home as well but coffee machines are not the money saver that some people will tell you. So buy yourself a coffee and spend that time trying to save yourself a few quid by changing providers or services you don’t use. #ireland #craic
I think your maths are off. 1kg bag of good coffee beans is €40. That gives 55 coffees. The equivalent of 55 coffee in a shop at €3.50 a coffee is €194. Yes there is electricity costs and milk costs but even taking that into account plus the cleaning tablets, descaler and filter you can still break even far sooner than 9 months. And if you make 2 coffee a day, it’s even faster.

Firstly if we only bought or did things that yielded a return on investment, nobody would do anything. Sometimes it’s about more than that. I bought mine with a one for all gift voucher work gave me so my starting point was already +€800. When in the the office I was buying 2 coffees a day and would run out for one when WFH. At €3.50/€4 a go, that’s about €26/28 a week. Often a couple at the weekend, could easily be €40. I now buy one bag of good beans for €36/40 and at 1kg I get about 55 cups from it. It costs roughly €0.60 per cup for me versus €4 in the coffee shop. You often impulse buy something else in the coffee shop too so you save money there. I reckon since buying it, I go to a coffee shop once/twice a month so the savings are pretty clear. Machine cleaning and maintenance doesn’t cost much either. I far more enjoy making my speciality coffee that I have perfectly dialled in that costs me 0.60 to make rather than going down to Starbucks, and giving handing them over €5.60 for a Latte that tastes more like hot water poured into an ashtray than a coffee.

I’ll keep my gas, electricity and insurance. Skip the queues and enjoy my coffee at home or in a travel mug.

Couldn’t disagree more, I’m saving 20 euro a week making it myself for years now. Preparing the night before is essential but a necessary sacrifice. I broke even on the cost of the machine ages ago.

What I enjoy most is waking up, putting on my slippers, and immediately making a coffee with beans that have the exact flavours I like, with a perfect milk ratio, in a nice cup I chose, - consistently every morning.

Maths is so far off the mark. Even further off the mark if you consume 10 coffees a week from the home machine

Nah, I’ll keep my €1700 coffee machine. Don’t care what it costs - enjoy the really nice coffee and each cup costs cents 🤷♂️

If you like coffee its great, you bought one, you save money if you drink more than one a day, you save even more if other people in the house also use it, morning coffee in the kitchen is better than going out for it.

I used to spend 1800 a year on coffee. Now I spend about 800 4 years after buying a sage. I've literally saved 50% after you buy this you realise only a few places can make coffee well.

your just wrong here, my home setup makes delicious coffee to the point where I don't but it in shops anymore because it's crap, and I'm very selective about coffee shops because my own is usually better

They might not save me on the coffee alone but they save on everything else that goes with going outings coffee; petrol; parking; the pastry I can’t say no to. It’s been a game changer tbh to have one of these at home

Regular coffee drinking is going to have 2 coffees a day is minimum if not 3. Which comes to €8-12 a day. A 500g bag of good quality beans (3fe etc) is €10. Drinking 2 coffees a day from this will last you just over a week. So you are totally wrong in your statement. Going out for coffee is still great but can’t beat being able to tip out to the kitchen for a barista standard coffee
