@noahgoinscomics: #billwatterson As a native of the suburbs of Cleveland I had no idea why I loved Calvin and Hobbes so much, and why no one ever told me that Watterson spent a majority of his life where I grew up. So it makes sense why I was able to connect with his art instantly, and even more reason to write about him. There’s something so rare about an artist who does the opposite of licensing and doesn’t want to see their characters anywhere but the pages they started on, it’s almost alien, especially nowadays where most comics are adapted into visual mediums to gain more popularity. That wasn’t the game for Watterson, and there’s something extremely admirable about letting go of the need to be ultra successful and wealthy at the expense of your original ideas. Apart from that he did comic strips better than anyone to come before or after him, and though he pushed to bring strips back in a big way, they still aren’t nearly as talked about or represented in medium of comics the way they should. Love to you Mr. Watterson. I shan’t be selfish with wanting more from you. #calvinandhobbes #comicstrips #comicartist #cartoonist

And all those shitty “peeing on Ford/Chevy” stickers were illegal and totally miss the point of Calvin.

I loved this comic so much. It was the reason I would even pick up the Sunday paper. I was a teenager through those years and I have the coffee table book of all of his comics. His artwork was on parallel and still blows my mind to this day.

Credibility in this kind of analysis content is really important. So when a content creator mispronounces the last name of a giant in the comic strip industry such as Charles Schulz, it makes it hard to keep watching. I myself stopped and now I’m going to swipe away.

Steven Axelrod :
There’s an interesting story about the merchandizing, which he told in the preface to a giant hard-cover boxed collection. He got a letter from his syndicate, asking for his input on various stuffed toy designs. He was like — none of them. “I don’t want the question of whether Hobbes is real or not decided by a stuffed animal toy.” They told him he had no choice — the merchandizing of the characters was written into his contract. He pointed out that he signed that contract when he was hoping to get one strip into one newspaper. If he had known that Calvin and Hobbes would become THE MOST SUCCESSFUL COMIC ever, he would never have signed those rights away. They were like … whatever. You signed and you can’t stop us. Maybe not legally, but he told them he would discontinue the strip if they commercialized it. They said, fine, we’ll get someone else to do it. Watterson responded… good luck with that idea. He won the stand-off, but the battle soured him in the syndicate and the strip. He retired soon afterward.

saddest thing about Calvin and Hobbs is the way it ended. I remember it. He was sitting down doing his homework. Hobbs was looking on trying to engage in in their usual mischievous adventures. Calvin kept brushing him off telling him he had work to do and then began telling him if memory serves of the medication that he had been getting and how he was maturing finally, the strip ends with Hobbs turning back into a stuffed tiger, which meant I thought the end of innocence on Calvin‘s record because Hobbs was in reality, a stuffed tiger and would turn into the stuffed tiger whenever other people were around, but when he was with Calvin he would magically turn into a alive tiger because he lived in the young boy’s imagination that was really sad. I was about that because eventually innocent.
