UP v IN stepping up means you're filling an empty role/spot. stepping in means youre trying to overtake an already filled role.

The language is a big factor in vs up if its a situation where step mom/dad stepped UP is completely different from a step mom/dad stepping IN stepping up gives the impression someone willingly stepped out vs stepping in seems more like they forced someone else out.

I’ve always wondered this. I’m a stepmom and I love my step children like they’re my own I treat them no differently than I treat my biological children, I attend their school functions, I attend doctors appointments, I attend sports activities i’ve held them while they cried. I’ve held them while they’re sick. I have done all of those things and society still paints me to be the evil stepmom.
