Roller coasters were actually invented to distract Americans from sin. Fearing the good ‘ol US-of-A was sliding into a cesspool of immorality, inventor LaMarcus Adna Thompson decided to do something about it. Sensing a rise in naughty antics following the end of the American Civil War, Thompson decided there needed to be a compelling distraction to draw gullible sinners away from pubs, casinos and dance halls. Yes, he even considered dancing a no-no. On a cross-country trip the fanatically religious Thompson happened upon a bunch of people riding an old coal train down a hill just for fun... and they weren’t even drunk. This was the light-bulb moment LaMarcus had been looking for in his quest to keep the minds of young people away from booze and good times. Witness the birth of the Roller Coaster. The first of these new-fangled Thompson roller coasters hit the rails in 1884 at the world famous Coney Island. Thompson chose Coney Island as it contained more than its fair of taverns, gambling shops, brothels and other shopkeepers of shady shenanigans. Thompson’s roller coaster was an immediate hit and a huge financial success for him. He went on to build many other gravity and scenic railway rides and made himself into a very wealthy man. Whilst there was no indication that his invention stopped roller riders participating in various other “sinful” activities, it seems that Thompson lost interest in saving souls as the money poured in from people simply having a good time on his rides. Funny that.
