THE 24-HOUR ECONOMY: FROM CAMPAIGN SLOGAN TO CRUEL SCAM Remember this advert? The one where they promised: "Formula 1-3-3. One job, three shifts, three people. Businesses will get tax incentives, cheap electricity, financial support, security. Triple job opportunities. Game changer." It sounded good. It sounded like hope. Now, let’s look at the reality 15 months later. What they said: “We will give businesses cheap electricity to work 24 hours.” What happened: Electricity tariffs increased by 9.86% in January 2026 Water tariffs up 15.92% The Dumsor Levy (GH¢1 per litre of fuel) is still in place – adding to energy costs Prepaid meters are draining faster, forcing PURC to investigate Question: Where is the “cheap electricity” for businesses to run three shifts? Even keeping lights on costs more now. What they said: “This will triple job opportunities.” What happened: Over 541 public sector workers sent home AMA staff contracts terminated 50,000 tonnes of cocoa unsold – no jobs there Gold reserves sold – no job creation from that either No single government agency (DVLA, ports, customs) working 24 hours today Question: If jobs have tripled, where are they? Name one company now running three shifts because of this policy. What they said: “Tax incentives, financial support, security support services.” What happened: New taxes introduced – Dumsor Levy, 15% VAT on non-life insurance, 2.5% import levy GH¢316 million YEA scandal – millions on staff Friday wear, polos, and vehicles instead of youth jobs GH¢2.7 billion for Jubilee House – while businesses struggle with high utility costs Question: What incentives? The only incentives we’ve seen are incentives for government officials to spend more on themselves. The advert promised “cheap electricity to work 24 hours.” But today: Electricity is more expensive (up 9.86%) Dumsor is back in some areas (yes, load shedding is real again) Fuel prices are climbing (petrol now GH¢12.40+ per litre) Businesses are shutting down, not expanding shifts The Ghanaian youth – especially those who believed and campaigned for this – are left looking foolish. Not because they trusted. But because they were sold a beautiful slogan with no plan. 1. If the 24-hour economy was a “game changer,” why has nothing changed? No agencies. No shift jobs. No cheap electricity. 2. Where did the GH¢100+ million budget for the 24-Hour Economy Authority go? Was it spent on salaries, workshops, and “coordination” – or actual job creation? 3. If the government cannot keep its promise on electricity and jobs, what can it keep? Cocoa farmers have lost 28.6% of their income. Workers have been sent home. Utilities have gone up. 4. Is it fair to call this a scam? A promise made to win votes. A promise broken the moment power changed hands. If that is not deception, what is? The 24-hour economy was never a policy. It was a campaign jingle – catchy, empty, and now embarrassing. The youth who danced to that advert are now struggling to find work, pay bills, and keep lights on. The only thing working 24 hours is the government’s ability to promise and disappoint and 24 hours Dumsor 😂 #ghanatiktok🇬🇭 #video #politics #ndc #scam
