@gregcpearson: This is one way you could pace your sub-1:45 half marathon. Focus on a negative split strategy. Starting at [insert pace] and finishing FASTER than where you started. The back half of the race should be completed faster than the front half. So for this example, when targeting a 1h:44m half marathon at an average pace of 4:56/km, your pacing splits could look like this: 6km @ 5:03/km 6km @ 4:57/km 6km @ 4:52/km 2km @ 4:46/km 1km @ 4:40/km …final 100m as fast as you bloody can. Pacing strategies aren’t super easy to execute on the day, however. Make sure you feel confident with the strategy you build. And remember, do your research of your race, the course profile, etc. Ultimately, the pacing strategy above would work well on a pan flat course, but if your race includes hills, you’re going to have to accommodate those sections in your pacing strategy. I.e. dropping your pace between 14-15km due to a 3% uphill gradient. You should also be confident of your pacing strategy based on the training you’ve been doing, including the likes of race pace workouts and long run sessions. Take a look at your training data and make informed decisions on your race pace strategy based on that data, alongside how you’ve been feeling in training. Don’t just wing your pacing strategy without the training to back it up. What’s your next half marathon pacing strategy going to look like?👇

I’m going for 1:50:00 HM. My pace is 4k 6:00. 4k 5:30. 10k 5:00 3.1k 4:00(whatever is left in the tank). This gets around 1:48:00, and with some give or taking in each km split, should get me around sub 1:50:00. Is this valid?

What if the profile is a literal U shape and you turn at the bottom of the U and go up from there to the end?

This is my goal for next month. What would be the longest distance training session at goal pace (4:56/km) you would suggest?
