People are generalizing the wasian experience. While it is important to acknowledge that there are privileges, it’s disappointing to see people state that wasians are celebrating white supremacy. However, so many wasians have faced the dilemma of not being Asian or White enough. Even within Wasian communities there are issues in relation to figuring out your identity. People are just seeking community within people who have gone through similar experience and it’s triggering that people aren’t allowing us to do that because we are half white…

As a wasian woman with a wasian dad, this week has been INCREDIBLY triggering and ngl im abt to uninstall tiktok bcuz of it. My maternal grandfather fought in the Vietnam war and is VERY racist. My wasian Japanese dad was told by his Japanese mom growing up that he was not Asian. The only Asian culture I got growing up in the Deep South was shame for being Asian. This discourse is incredibly hurtful.

The wasian experience to me has always been the “lack of,” rather than being mixed race. Neither white enough or Asian enough, yes, but it is more complex than that. It should be said that some of us do get the privilege of being white passing. At the same time we are not celebrating our whiteness, because for most of us that side suppressed our asian heritage. On the other hand, we have been turned away when we want to learn and celebrate our Asian heritage because we are “too white.” We are not just mixed, but part oppressed and part oppressor. Being wasian is a unique experience, one that is only understood by other wasians. An experience where we don’t want to suppress the voices of the BIPOC community, but we want our experiences to be heard. Experiences that have been suppressed by our white side AND the BIPOC side because we have never been “enough.” We are finally seeing ourselves in the media, and are trying to create a space in this world for our community. Our intent was never to suppress others, but to finally find community and share our experiences.

as someone who is wasian i have never felt like i fit in, especially being a blonde kid growing up, i was constantly bullied by other asian ppl and i never felt like i fit in. and my dad is the asian one. i think people dont understand how difficult it is to feel like you fit in on either side.

this is a statement about me and my experience, not others. i’m not “asian enough”, but i’ve still been thrown in trash cans and been called slurs. but also i’m not “white enough” because i look “more asian” and practice many different parts of my culture. but im also not “mexican enough” because i cant speak spanish (but to some people i deserve to be deported because im mexican). im too much, but also not enough. this entire situation is extremely confusing and frustrating to me. i truly do not understand why people have such an issue with others finding a community they can finally fit in with and be understood. the other part that i get is how the term “wasian” is what’s being advertised as all mixed asians, when it just diminishes all the other possible mixes. i should not be called a traitor and a white supremacist just because i happen to be part white. i should not be called a “wannabe mexican” just because i happen to be mexican. i should not be called “a product of fetishization” just because i happen to be asian. i love each part of my identity and culture, and i do not understand why people feel the need to diminish it.

thank you for sharing your experience. after watching your video, I felt like the question written in it unintentionally reinforces the same issue the event itself was criticized for. it doesn’t feel inviting to other mixed Asian people who may share similar experiences but are not specifically half white. being wasian is not the only mixed Asian experience, and because wasians are still Asian, other Asians are naturally going to engage in this conversation too since the event centered whiteness in a way that divided the community rather than bringing people together cause again, blasians and Hispanic Asians do exist.

Yes!! Like why are people who aren’t even mixed OR Asian making videos abt this??? And then when a wasian speaks up ppl who aren’t wasian are in the comments making a fuss and telling them what THEIR experience is.

I'm an elder wasian born in the '60s. This whole conversation underscores the complexities of being a half white person of colour.

While I do think it was problematic of the organizers to originally say it was a mixed-Asian event and then to only advertise it as a wasian meet-up, I think a lot of the discourse I've seen has been very accusatory towards wasians (e.g. saying that wanting to have a wasian meet-up is an act of white supremacy) and very dismissive of our lived experiences.

literally being wasian has made me so racially ambiguous… like people have treated me whatever they THOUGHT i looked like… i tan very much and do not look white in the summer…

If anything this is cool finding other folks similar backgrounds to me and hearing their experiences.

I did also find it a bit triggering as it tried to turn us into a monolith when there are so many combinations and experiences. I also have never used wasian and now only use mixed as an identifier. Like my dad is from Hawaii and I’ve had a strong mixed community identity. The only times I’ve ever had issues with identity or community is when others try to force me to be what they want me to fit into.

I really like that Steffie made a post to monoracial Asian parents too and not solely place blame on Wasian people. I think it’s necessary for non white biracial/triracial people to call out white supremacy within our communities….but also agree on your points. Not all wasians are the same or a monolith. Personally I thought the meetup was bs

It’s the name - “wasian” that is causing the upset. And, a bunch of people that don’t get it. It needs an updated name like ASA (Asian American mix) or MixA. Before Wasian they called us Euroasian or Hapa - what’s the difference… I love the meet up group and proud of the generation leading it. 💗 🇯🇵 🇺🇸 💗

No bc why are people so obsessed with debating identities that ARENT theirs. there is so much more nuance to this topic that people are just not thinking about. i wish people were more empathetic and understanding and open

Mixed race identity is always a complex topic to navigate. Like with any identity group, it’s probably best to listen to people of that identity!

as someone who’s half filipino half white, who looks just enough but also not enough like both of her parents (and grew up with only one of them as a primary influence)…I also hate all of the discourse recently. I don’t think some people realize how polarizing it can be to grow up within such conflicting environments while still attempting to balance and foster your own identity 😭
