Your logic is correct, however, your saying that the gear is holding thousands of pounds is incorrect. It's holding hundreds of pounds, if it were over a thousand the metal tab would break the first time.

Is this just an American thing??? Us Aussies use our parking brakes everytime we park the car regardless if there is an incline or on flat ground. And of course with hill stops and starts.
