@parisintherayn: When people think of Penang, George Town often gets all the attention, but Bukit Mertajam also played a major role in Penang’s history through its booming agriculture and tin mining industry from the 1850s to 1880s. Home to the 130 year old Market, Bukit Mertajam is still filled with nostalgic pre-war shophouses and family-run businesses, and here are a few local spots I personally recommend exploring 🎯 🍍 1. Kedai Kopi Ah Meng (Rojak Orang Putih Hitam) A nostalgic kopitiam in the old market area, best known for its refreshing rojak made with tropical fruits, crispy crackers, rich palm sugar sauce, and crushed peanuts. 🥮 2. Chop Lean Seng (Est. 1950s) A traditional biscuit shop near the market gate, selling old-school favorites like Tau Sar Pneah and Hup Toh Soh from a charming pre-war shophouse. 🍵 3. Kedai Kekwa (Est. 1960s) A tiny roadside stall serving sugarcane juice, chrysanthemum tea, and traditional herbal drinks since the 1960s, loved by generations of locals. 🍛 4. Nasi Kandar Ali (Est. 1948) One of Bukit Mertajam’s oldest Nasi Kandar spots, still operating inside a historic building that once housed a hotel upstairs. 🥢 5. Yoong Kee Eating House (Est. 1950s) A long-running local favorite known for comforting Teochew-style dishes, affordable meals, and its nostalgic old three-digit phone number sign. Since all these places are located close to one another, I was able to visit them all in a single day. The Scan & Pay feature from MAE app has been very convenient for making quick payments. It also helps me keep track of my spending! Overall, I truly enjoyed exploring the heritage side of Bukit Mertajam.
