One by one, they begin to loosen. In the descent of Inanna, each gate removes another layer before she stands before Ereshkigal with nothing left to hide behind. Not as punishment and not as humiliation. Because there is a version of the self that can only be encountered when everything constructed around it falls away. This is often the hardest part of the descent to understand while you are inside it. The feeling that life is stripping things away can feel like loss, like unraveling, like disappearance. But sometimes what is being removed was never the deepest truth of who you are. The descent has a way of bringing you beneath performance, beneath survival, beneath the identities built to navigate the world, until you reach something more essential.
