Its core beliefs included: * Earth was about to undergo a transformation or be “recycled.” * A higher extraterrestrial “Next Level” existed beyond human life. * Humans could ascend to this Next Level by rejecting worldly attachments and following strict spiritual discipline. * UFOs were viewed as vehicles associated with these higher beings. The group’s teachings combined elements of Christianity, science fiction, and beliefs about extraterrestrial life. What happened in 1997? In March 1997, 39 members of Heaven’s Gate, including Applewhite, died by suicide together at a house in Rancho Santa Fe. They believed that the comet Hale–Bopp was accompanied by a spacecraft that would take their souls to the “Next Level.” They viewed leaving their physical bodies as necessary to board this spacecraft. This event became one of the most widely known mass suicides associated with a religious movement in modern history. Why is it still discussed?
