For anyone concerned about Wii: 32bit signed integers can technically count until 2038, but the limit is 31 dec 2035 because Nintendo didnโt program the calendar ui to go any further. BUT itโs very likely modders will come up with a fix in the meantime, like changing it to be an unsigned int or add an offset to start the count in the 2000s instead of 1970. Even if nobody will find a solution, your console wonโt explode, the calendar will just go back to the beginning or stay stuck to the last day. you can simply set the date back manually. Most games will work fine, but anything relying on timestamps like messages, histories or the calendar ui would likely get messed up

when i get older ill probably find a way to rewrite 32bit applications and convert them to 64bit if it doesnt already exist by then

I remember getting the Wii in 2006 and scrolling that far saying thatโs extremely far away. Time flys by way too fast.

It would just Overflow/Underflow back to the oldest date. Wouldnโt really break unless you have a time sensitive game. Either that or itโll just get stuck on that last day, still wonโt break.

32-bit devices can still use two long integers to count beyond that, but doing this is significantly slower, especially in real-time applications

They can, it's just that the default integer limit prevents it. Simple workarounds have been built-in to compilers for decades to get around this.

this is a unix time bug that has ALMOST NOTHING to do with the hardware. some of the oldest unix operating systems ran on 16-bit hardware yet still used a 32-bit integer, and 32-bit hardware can also use a 64-bit integer.

This is much worse than the y2k situation, btw! many software companies have been on it SINCE 2000 because they were seeing this and trying to plan ahead, but they've still barely made a dent in what they need to do! They're working to rewrite the code for the entire world to hopefully not change much of what we work with while changing everything about the backend!
